Spring's Socks

Esquire Magazine, March 1983, Photo by Fabrizio Gianni

My mission for Spring and Summer is to bring back socks. I'm probably not going to make it but a man has to do what a man has to do.

Well, maybe socks are going to be what separates the men from the boys this spring and summer.

I'd settle for people uncuffing everything.

Some of us never gave them up. It may look cool but it's uncomfortable.

You will have to begin your campaign in Annapolis,MD where each year they ritualize the burning of the socks.

I guess I want to see your choices before I decide how I feel about all of this. The guy in the photo is just...so...unsexy to me. So much depends on the shoe choice as well - socks with Tod's seems ill conceived; socks with penny loafers - o.k.

I'd kill for a pair of white flannels (I guess that's what he's wearing)

Black shoes with so much cream and brown seems ill conceived to me. Shoes in light or dark brown would be so much better.

Actually, I like straight men, and the cellist sets off my gaydar.

Well, the quality of any production is in the details - as you may already be aware - I'm big on this and people pay me big money to pick things apart and get it right. To start, he's holding a half-sized cello. Those are for kids. The tie is too casual for the jacket - my opinion. But I guess, on reflection, all of that has very little to do with whether or not I find him sexy. I generally prefer a dark suit, a custom shirt, and a really nice tie. I miss ties.

Just as I'm quitting socks, and all because of you.

Socks can be used all time of the year i think. Summer is no exception.
